September News

We are nearing the tail end of yet another incredibly hot & humid heat wave.  Today is supposed to be the worst, with temps in the 90's mixed with high humidity & bad air quality, but as the week progresses the temps are supposed to come down.

I haven't been for a jog in 4 days because of the heat.  I was really struggling to keep up any sort of a good pace so I decided it would be best to just wait out the heat wave.  I still try to get in some exercise every day though - even if it's just a brisk walk around the neighborhood with the dog.  I figure something is better than nothing, right?

We went for a super long walk the other night - 3 1/2 miles - to Latham Park in Barrington.  Jim, Kyle, Isabella and Savannah rode their bikes while I pushed Sebastian in the stroller and walked with Lucky:

Mrs. Primmer, the Religious Coordinator at St. Brendan's, asked if I could run the 2nd Grade CCD class on Sunday mornings from 9-10:15.  Initially I was going to decline; I have a lot on my plate these days between homeschooling, the kids activities and just life in general!  But after reviewing the teachers lesson book I decided that I would help out after all.  The lessons are very easy to follow; everything is already planned out for me.  I spent 15 minutes or so reading through the 1st chapter and had my 1st lesson prepared within 5 minutes.  My game plan is to take Kyle and Bella to the 8:00A mass, drop them off at their CCD classes afterwards (mass ends at 8:45A) and then head to my class.  We'll see how things work out on Sunday!

The kids are participating in a homeschool program this year called "Passport Around The World".  The class runs once a month and is held at the Rec center close to our house.  Each child gets a "Passport" and will participate in a series of World Geography themed gatherings.  Everyone brings a dish or dessert associated with the place they're studying and will enjoy a variety of foods for a potluck lunch all while learning about various places.  The class also gives kids the chance to speak in a group environment with other homeschooled kids, which is great.  The first class is held at the end of October and will focus on Puerto Rico.  We are looking forward to it!

Kyle, Bella & Savannah have been doing well with their school work.  We try to work around Sebastian's two naps so we tend to do some work in the morning & then we finish up in the afternoon.  Keeping everyone focused on their work - and not each other - can be challenging at times.  I want them to understand that it's important to be able to block out 'background noise' so I try to have them do as much work as possible while they're all sitting at the same table.  I split them up for reading and math, though.

Sebastian is standing up all over the place now, but he's not quite ready to take that 1st step yet.  He's eating a variety of table foods & just this week he weaned himself off of another bottle, so he's down to just 3 formula feedings per day with 1 of them coming from a sippy cup.  I had planned on waiting a few more weeks before having him use a sippy cup in place of the bottle but all of a sudden he just seemed ready!

Pretty soon I'll have to go through the older kids wardrobes to see what fits and what doesn't for the colder months.  Over the years this has become my least favorite chore because it is so incredibly time consuming!  We now have an extra dresser for the girls though so instead of packing away all of their summer things I will just transfer them to the spare dresser.  This should make things a lot easier for me come Spring/Summer!
