I was up at 2:00A and then again at 4:00A with Bella. She said she kept having bad dreams. She finally fell into a deep sleep, just in time for Savannah to decide that 5:00A would be a fabulous time to start this rainy, dreary day. You know you're a "seasoned" parent when you're really not phased by the fact that you only got 3 hours of sleep during the night! You also know you're a "seasoned" parent when you allow your toddler to have a piece of chocolate candy, followed by a lollipop, at 6:15A. Some battles just aren't worth fighting before the pot of coffee has been emptied, you know?
The 3 kids have been playing together quite a bit lately, which is fun to watch. Savannah is no longer the "odd man out". She's always included in Kyle and Bella's games. Most of the time I don't know exactly what it is they're playing - it generally involves a whole lot of running, chasing and climbing though! They cover every square inch of the backyard a million times over within an hours worth of time! Of course, they are siblings and therefore don't always get along. They have their fair share of screaming matches and disagreements through-out any given day. And they are positively, absolutely, all-the-time, LOUD. Whether they are fighting or playing, they are LOUD. I feel like I'm constantly telling them to use "quiet voices" but pretty soon I think I'm going to give up. I'm beginning to believe that that's just how kids are programmed. They talk loud, laugh loud, cry loud. Pretty much the only time my house is quiet is when Savannah is napping during the afternoon and when they're all in bed for the night. I especially look forward to Savannah's nap because it gives the rest of us an opportunity to enjoy some much needed "down time". During that time Kyle will usually grab a book, hop on my bed and read for about an hour. Bella and I will spend about 30 minutes doing some type of learning work, whether it's writing a letter to her grandparents or doing a reading lesson or, most recently, doing a little math. I've only just introduced her to the concept of simple math - addition - but so far she is doing well. When we're finished she will do something quiet - color, look at books or play with her farm animals.
Kyle's appetite for reading is huge. Lately we've been going to the library twice a week. Sometimes I will sit in the car with the girls while he runs in to grab a few books while other times we'll all go in so the girls can pick out some books too. Earlier this week I let just Kyle and Bella go into the library together while I waited in the car with Savannah. I parked right in front of the library so I could easily watch them go in and I gave them both strict instructions to grab some books and come straight out. They did exactly as they were told, which was a relief! On average Kyle reads approx 4-7 books per week, depending on the amount of pages in each book. Sometimes he will get a book from the library and finish it in less than a couple of hours! I love the fact that he loves to read, therefore I rarely say "no" to him when he asks if we can go to the library. We are fortunate in that we live just 5 minutes away from one of the libraries here in East Providence. The other (much bigger) library isn't too far away, just 10-15 minutes or so, but the parking is horrendous which is pretty much the only reason why we don't go there often. A 10 minute trip could easily turn into a 2 hour trip when you have to park way down the road just to get to the entrance of the building! When Kyle finishes the batch of books he got yesterday I am going to ask Mike if he will take him to that library some afternoon. Their selection is far larger and, without having the girls in tow, Kyle would be able to take his time in picking out books that he's interested in vs. having to rush and just grab stuff off the shelves haha!
