Kyle Receives His 1st Holy Communion AND turns 10!!

May 18, 2014

Kyle's 1st Holy Communion and 10th Birthday!

On Sunday, May 18th, with the sun shining and the skies a bright blue, Kyle had a very special day as he received his 1st Holy Communion and celebrated his 10th(!!) Birthday!  While he was none too pleased to have to wear a suit to church, he surprisingly got dressed without much complaint!  I'm attributing this to the fact that we showered him with birthday gifts shortly after he woke up that morning:  3 Minecraft Adventures books, a Minecraft T-shirt, Misc. parts for his remote control car and his "big" gift - an outdoor remote controlled airplane.  As we expected, he was thrilled with everything.  :)
Mrs. Primmer requested that we arrive at the church 15 minutes before Mass so we headed over there at 10:00A.  After a little bit of seating arrangement confusion, we were all situated and settled into our pews with time to spare.  As usual, the Mass was inspiring and uplifting.  Father Codega mentioned Kyle's name (along with the other two children who were also receiving their 1st Communion) a couple of times and had some special words for him as he called him up to receive his 1st Holy Communion.  It was a very special moment in our lives - one in which I will treasure forever.
Immediately following the church we headed back home to begin the Communion/Birthday celebration!  I had spent the previous day cooking so that things wouldn't be *too* crazy on Sunday.  I prepared meatballs, sausage, peppers and onions, baked ziti, cold pasta salad and 3 bean salad.  I baked Kyle's birthday cake, too.  Jim and the kids did their part before we went to church as they filled the coolers with ice and set up the tent, tables and chairs.  (We are super fortunate in that our neighbors are always kind enough to allow us to borrow some of their tables and chairs!)  As soon as we got home from the church Jim helped carry all of the food outside so that we could jump right into the festivities.
I was a little nervous when I saw how quickly the food disappeared lol -- within an hour or so all of the crockpots were empty -- and let me tell you, those crockpots were FULL.  I had cooked 5 lbs of sausage and made over 60 meatballs!!!  I felt bad for the Winer family -- Ina had to work so they didn't arrive until after 3.  By that time the pickings were incredibly slim with barely enough food left for them to make a full plate.  I guess next time I'll have to make double batches of everything!
I was thrilled to see so many people join us for Kyle's big celebration(s).  The whole yard was full of kids running, laughing and playing!  Kyle had such a fun time playing with everyone, as did the girls.  As I've said many times before, our yard may not be the "prettiest", but it is definitely a place that generates a lot of fun!  From the tree fort to the tire swing, the sand box to the climbing structures, the kids always make great use out of everything!
Isabella, dressed in her "Sunday Best", spent much of the party carrying around her "bug container" (a cool whip container) searching for bugs - in particular, caterpillars.  When she wasn't on the hunt for bugs, she could be found eating watermelon.  Lots of watermelon.  I'm pretty sure she ate half of an entire whole watermelon...
Kyle received many, many great gifts and has already spent much of this week alternating between playing with his new Lego sets and writing out Thank-You notes.  He truly had a wonderful, special day and we are ALL very thankful to be blessed with so many wonderful friends and family!
