3 Little Bookworms

All 3 of my kids love books.  Kyle loves to read, Isabella loves to be read to and Savannah loves to look at the pictures.
From the day Kyle learned how to read he has been a bookworm.  He will read just about anything - comic books, newspapers, magazines, hardcover and softcover books.  He LOVES to learn and he has a very bright imagination so it's no surprise to me that he enjoys reading as much as he does.
Lately he's been creating his own little books.  He will take a few pieces of white paper, staple them together and make up a short story.  He has quite a collection going now!
This week we took a trip to the library.  In general the library tends to be overwhelming for Kyle.  So many books, so many choices!  This time around I guided him to a section that contained small chapter and series books.  He's been ready for chapter books for quite some time now.  We only have a few of them at home, which he's already read.  I figured he might like to get involved with reading a series.  Personally, I love series books.  It gives the reader a chance to really get to know the characters and background.  I explained to Kyle how books that are part of a series are much like a movie.  You just have to use your imagination to see what the characters look like.
Kyle chose 5 books - 4 of which are chapter/series books.  One of the books he chose is from the "Ready, Freddy" series.  The title of the book is "Don't Sit On My Lunch!"  Freddy is a 1st Grader who has to face a bully.  In the end, the bully becomes his friend.
When we got home from the library Kyle said he was going to read "Don't Sit On My Lunch" up in his room.  An hour and a half later he came downstairs announcing that he had finished the entire book!  10 chapters, 100 pages!!!  Within a matter of two days flat he had finished all but one of the books.  He said his brain wouldn't let him stop reading because they were so good, hahaha!
I know some people view the way Jim & I are raising our kids as a little strange, with Kyle being homeschooled and the t.v. only being turned on as a "special" treat every now and again but I really believe this is why they are turning out to be so well rounded.  Yesterday Kyle spent 3 1/2 hours STRAIGHT playing with his Electrical Kit that he got for Christmas.  His mind is always working and I think that's a great thing because it enables him to learn things quickly.  And I can already see Isabella following in his footsteps, as she flips through book after book after book!  She loves "helping" Jim when he's working on little projects, too.  It's just a matter of time before she is telling us all about how an engine works...
