Today I overheard a pretty detailed conversation between Kyle & his pal Harry. Harry asked him what happens to us when we die. Kyle said to him "Let me tell you the story about God". While I can't quote Kyle word for word, this is basically what he had to say:
We go to Heaven. God & Jesus will take care of us there. God & Jesus are "good guys". God decorated the earth with trees, grass, animals, people, food & trucks. He made people different colors & he made them look different, too. He did this because he pretended to be blind because he thinks everyone should love everyone no matter what color they are or how they look. He loves everyone, even if they're a bad guy, because until they die they can always try to be a good guy instead. If we grow up to be good guys we can try to help the bad guys get good too. Then the world would be a better place for everyone, don't you think Harry?
Then Kyle said to Harry "Not everyone believes in God, but they should". Harry asked him why. Kyle said "Because it's the right thing to do. If you don't believe in God, who will you believe in?".
How is it that a person who has only been on this Earth for 6 short years can understand things better than the average adult? Imagine if we could all think with such simplicity?
Why is it that morals, goals & values seem to have hit the back burner amongst many people?
What happened to family traditions?
Has anyone stopped to think about why there are so many "mean" kids out there in the schools tormenting other kids? Were they ever taught kindness & manners?
A child is born knowing very little. We, as their parents, teach them pretty much everything they know. We set the examples. They learn from us. Perhaps too many of us don't see the significance in that? If Mom is yelling at Dad (or vice versa) would it really be far fetched to say that the child thinks that's right? If Dad doesn't say "please" & "thank you" why would the child? Why do most kids sit in front of the t/v for several hours per day? What are Mom & Dad doing? Imagine taking away some of that t/v time & replacing it with some good old fashioned "quality family time". Does anyone even know what that means anymore? To sit & spend direct one-on-one time together without the interuptions of cell phones, televisions & computers. How about pretending the power has gone out. Maybe light a few candles & dust off that Monopoly board.
Our children are so spoiled. The entire country is spoiled. Everything is so materialistic now. But we can change that. Maybe you're wondering how. I think the answer may be as simple as thinking like a 6 yr old. Simplicity. Let's start with our children, for they are our future. Let's teach them all about morals, values & goals. Let's teach them that the best things in life can not be bought. Let's teach them to find happiness within themselves. Let's teach them that it's better to give than to receive. Let's teach them that a hand-made gift will always be better than a store bought gift. Let's spend less money on our children & give them more of our time instead. Let's teach them that change can happen if we make it happen. We need to be more pro-active. It's so easy to say we're going to do something but how many of us actually follow through with it?
I'm making some big changes. I hope you will too. Our children deserve a better future.
