The forecast last night predicted that the temps would reach 100 degree's today, with 100% humidity. I optimistically "set up" the backyard at 8:30a..in anticipation of a hot, but fun day. I filled the baby pool, set-up the sprinkler & Slip N Slide, opened the sandbox & umbrella, filled water bottles with ice water & grabbed an extra bottle of sunscreen. During that time I was pretty hot, but still feeling optimistic..
At 9:00a I put Savannah down for her morning nap & headed out to the yard w/ Bella while Kyle & Mike went to Karate. Just as I had expected, there was a lovely breeze in the shade. I sat under the umbrella at the patio set & watched Bella happily play for about 10 minutes before she asked if she could go swimming in the big pool. As I was taking the cover off of the pool I could see that the water had turned green, seemingly overnight. Argh! I cleaned the filter, added some chlorine to the water, lost about 5 lbs in sweat & gave Bella the news that she'd have to play in the little pool for the day. She wasn't pleased. I bent over backwards to try to cheer her up, lugging a few of her playsets from the living room out to the backyard. Sweat was pouring off of me but even still, I remained optimistic. I knew if I could just sit down in the shade I'd cool off in a jiffy. Unfortunately, Bella was in no mood for me to sit down. She was downright miserable. She didn't want to play in the little pool. She needed to be in the big pool. I was counting the minutes until Kyle got home, thinking he would provide a great distraction for her & they would go off & play together.
When Kyle arrived home from Karate & saw that the big pool was "closed" for the day he promptly decided that he would go up to his room, turn on the a/c & build with Lego's. (smart kid!) I was kind of bummed that he didn't want to spend any time outdoors, but I agreed to let him go play in his room as he has been spending much of his time out in the yard.
Bella remained miserable.
Savannah woke up from her nap shortly before 11 & seemed to be in a fine mood. I slathered her in sunscreen & brought her outside. We had an uneventful lunch outside (where I think I lost another 5 lbs in sweat while getting the kids meals ready..) & then I put a *very* grouchy Bella down for her nap. She was asleep within seconds, in the comfort of her air conditoned bedroom. I checked in on Kyle, who was playing very happily by himself in his cool room. And then Savannah had the mother of all meltdowns outside. While she did play in the pool & shade I couldn't keep her contained to one place for any length of time so I assumed the heat had gotten to her. The sun was unbearably hot & I was sweating bullets just trying to make her happy. On top of it all, she had a "diaper explosion" that required me to put the hose on her..and so it was then that I decided it was time to call it quits. I "closed-up" the yard & we headed back inside at 1:00p. I was a hot mess. I gave Savannah a cool bath & then I took a quick, cool, refreshing shower.
Savannah seemed considerably happier after her bath (as did I!) although she had several more "diaper explosions" as the afternoon wore on. She layed down on Bella's little couch & relaxed for a while..
She didn't seem to want to play very much, but she was her usual smiley self...And then... all hell broke loose.
Within minutes she had worked herself up into such a frenzy that even her blankie wasn't calming her down for more than a few seconds.
A quick check of her temperature revealed that her teething issues were back. I gave her a dose of Motrin & 20 minutes later she had calmed down.
With the heatwave raging on, we had made plans to have friends over to go swimming in the morning & in the afternoon & we were tossing around the idea of having one of Kyle's buddies sleep over. I have since cancelled everything. Sometimes you just gotta cut your losses. I love being outdoors but I guess it's unrealistic to think that 3 kids, 1 who is cutting teeth all over the place!, are going to enjoy being out in 100 degree weather (especially when the pool is under maintenance!)
We will not be leaving the comfort of our air conditioned living room for anything, or anyone!, tomorrow. I learned my lesson today. One hot mess is about all I can handle..!!
