An Entry For My Handsome Son

Dear Kyle,
It's a cold, winter morning. Today you are wearing a t-shirt to school. You said you wanted to wear a t-shirt because it means Spring is almost here. Well, Spring won't be here for a while yet, buddy, but there's no harm in dreaming & wishing!
At 5 1/2 yrs old you are the spitting image of your Dad. You look a bit like him, but mostly you act like him. You have a passion for learning. You're always asking "why?" or "what's the reason for..?" ( I should note that often I hear Dad asking his Dad a lot of questions too!) You want to know how everything works & how things exist. Each & every day you ask dozens & dozens of random questions -- such as: Do we live ON the Earth or IN the Earth? How does electricity get into the plugs? What size engine is in the Buick? Who thought of making Cocoa Puffs? Who puts stars in the sky? When I grow up can I still play with my kid toys? When I'm a parent will I be able to have a baby in my belly?....and to think, these are just a FEW of the questions that you come up with on a regular basis!!
At such a young age it is easy for us all to see that just like Dad you were born mechanically inclined. Not only do you enjoy fixing things, but you're very good at it, too!! You follow Dad around like a shadow - if something is broken you both work together as a team to fix it. Yesterday you were upstairs in the new playroom putting putty on the walls & helping to sand. The day before you were going through all of your toys & replacing the dead batteries - you can screw & unscrew without any help at all! If something is broken, it can be fixed. Nothing gets thrown away. This, too, you got from Dad.
When you grow up you want to operate a building company with Dad. You want to help build houses, sheds, garages & cars.
Speaking of cars, you were also born with a passion for speed & for all vehicles in general. Just like Dad. No surprise there! You know more about the engine in my car than I do. From alternators to timing belts you know it all! In the summer months you can be found under the hood of any one of Dad's cars, helping "fix it". When you were 3 yrs old you parallel parked your PowerWheels Jeep. Now, at 5 1/2, you ride a gas powered ATV as though you've been riding it for 10 years!
I would have to say, at this point in time, that Dad is your best friend. He has an unbelievable amount of patience & truly enjoys teaching you how to do new things. He loves having you by his side & you love being there! This past Saturday he took you to the dump to ride on your ATV. He called Uncle John first to see if he wanted to go too, but Uncle John already had plans. You overheard the conversation & said "It's okay that he can't come, Dad. We still have each other, right?"
As for your relationship with me - well - you're still my little boy (and you always will be, too!)! I'm teaching you how to read, write & do math. Every night we do work books together. We love to do arts & crafts, too! This week we're making Valentines. I taught you how to cut out a heart - & now you can make Valentines all by yourself! You spend hours coloring, cutting, painting etc. You also love to play with Playdough. Lately you've been pretending to play "Man Vs. Wild" - you make bugs out of the playdough & pretend to eat them. We read together every night, except for on weekends - then it's Dad's turn to read to you!
You also LOVE playing video games & board games too. You love to build & will play with Lego's for hours.
You have the most amazing, vivid imagination! Often I tell people how you get lost in "Imagination World". You're either pretending to be a car, or you're pretending to be someone from Star Wars. Sometimes I have no idea WHO you're pretending to be..but it's pretty darn funny to watch you in action!
You love to make your baby sister laugh & you can't wait for her to be big enough to play with. You like to lay on the floor next to her & give her toys. You don't like it when she has to take a nap!
You're a mixture of trouble & sweetness..& I love everything about you! You're a perfect little boy.

I love this posting, and the new direction of your blog. You've summed up Kyle perfectly. He is such an amazing little boy- mostly because he has amazing parents. I love the way you and Jim treat him like a little adult, with Jim allowing his to tag along and help out with almost any task. I love that he finds somany things so interesting. His questions actually all sound like very good ones- and mean he's ALWAYS thinking. He's so smart. I love it!
