Big House Project '09 Part 2

Last week Jim decided to tackle what he originally thought was a "small problem" while waiting for the wood for the addition to be delivered...
Over the winter we noticed a wet spot on the wall in the living room, clearly indicating that water was somehow getting into the wall.
Jim took down some of the vinyl siding to see if he could find the problem expecting to find maybe a small hole...

Within minutes the look on his face told me that this was no "small" problem..

First, a small hole was spotted...but after taking off more siding the small hole turned out to be a rather LARGE hole..!!

Jim had to cut out all of the rotted wood & replace it, obviously, with new wood...

But, even after he covered up the hole, he was worried that perhaps there were more holes...so he decided to remove most of the siding on the front of the house to investigate..

Fortunately, no more holes were found. But now Jim had the big task of putting in new insulation & getting the siding back up.
Papa Joe came to the rescue..It was Papa Joe who discovered that the cause of the problem was the gutter. It had been installed wrong. Go figure!

Father & Son spent a total of 3 days (in the rain on the final day) getting the front of the house put back together again..
But they finished it just in time before the big shipment of wood came for the addition!

Well Leddie Lou, when you plan on living in your house forever you've got no choice but to be brave and fix any/all problems associated with it! Fortunately Jim is handy enough to where we never have to pay for professionals to get the job done, otherwise we'd be living in a cardboard box by now!! It's always so much work but at the same time it's always worth it! :)
